Default Automatic list numbering right-aligned by the dot

Hi there

At the suggestion of Stefan, I've opened a new thread rather than continuing this one: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/4...tml#post137548

We have been using a fully customised List Style (up to 6 levels) as explained here.

Today, I was asked to right aligned automatic numbering of list. I thought that changing settings (from "left" to "right") in List style would do but no, it doesn't!

When I select "Right", you can see that the tab is disappearing and following automatic numbering (when I press Enter) don't have a tab neither. Oh yeah, and when I press "Tab" to create the tab, sure it goes to second level (the way it should be).

So I am stuck. I have tried different settings in "follow number with" or "Tab stop at", etc. but I keep getting numbers right aligned but without a tab after.

Any hep would be welcome.

Thanks

I would set this up as follows, with all the numbers in the right-aligned in the left margin. (In my example, I am only using the first three levels, but the principle would of course be the same for a "complete" nine-level list.)

If you want each list level to also be indented from the left, it would require more fiddling. As far as I know, you can't get numbers to align on punctuation, only on the number symbol itself.

The problem is that I can't implement workarounds or tweaking as we have a clear template with clear styles sheet and layout

Having a "follow number with" a tab is a must. But tabs aren't just not there if "number alignment" is set to "right". Looks like a MS Word glitch to me. And it is not fault of not trying.

Thanks for replying. Not solved, too bad.

Change the set tab at to 2.5 cm or whatever you want or leave this unchecked. This measurement is from the left margin, not from the point of alignment. You currently have it set for a point before your alignment point. I believe this clears the tab settings for the rest of the paragraph, making the tab non-operative.

If you want, post a sample document with the problem and I'll verify that this is what is happening.

Stefan, you are following with a space rather than a tab.

Your answer is the other thread has been helpful. After different tries, I found out that formatting of paragraph itself (here "Normal_Number) need to be adjusted... made some progress although not getting what I want.

Oddly, paragraph "Hanging" and list's "text indent at" are linked... if you change value of one, then value of the other is also changing.

I shall revert back tomorrow but will tell my boss that anyway, numbered list right-aligned to the dot is pretty ugly, numbers are aligned with headers and it makes the number float.

Thanks for your help. For sure I will give the template for the professionals to check and find a solution. Cheers

  1. Indents in numbered paragraphs should only be set using the define multi-level list dialog, not in ordinary paragraph formatting or in style modification.
  2. What is the difference between headings and headers?

Charles, yes, I used a space intentionally (with "Aligned at" and "Text indent at" set to zero) to set this up with the numbered items in the left margin. I made that suggestion because I wasn't clear on what the original poster was trying to accomplish, exactly.

It is possible to set up a multilevel list with right-aligned numbering, but some trial and error will be required to get the indentation around numbers correct (as I stated in earlier replies).

If you want a hanging indent for each level, the "Text indent" setting for each level must be equal to "Add tab stop at" at that same level, and the specified value must be larger than "Aligned at." I believe that Charles covered this in one of his replies.

Personally, I find that putting the numbers in the margin looks better with right-aligned numbering.

With an indented list, left-aligned numbers are a bit easier, but right-aligned numbering looks better, once you have got it right.

Good luck, whatever you decide to do. :-)

The following example with right-aligned numbering uses 1 cm for "Aligned at" and 2 cm for "Text indent at" and "Add tab stop at." Following levels increase each of these values by 1 cm.
