Default How to start heading with 2.1.?

Hello everyone,

My document needs to have the following structure:
Chapter 1 - XXXX
1.1. XXXX
1.2. XXXX
Chapter 2 - XXXX
2.1. XXXX
2.2. XXXX
Etc.

When I created the 1.1. there was no problem, I simply wrote "1.1." and Word automatically recognized that it was a heading. But, now that I am on Chapter 2, if I write "2.1." it stays as plain text and is not recognized as a heading.

If I write "2" and then "2.1." it will recognize both as headings, but I do not want "2", I want to start with "2.1."

I would be extremely grateful if anyone could help me.

See and follow the instructions in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly.

The pattern applied by AutoFormat as you type or by using the buttons on the ribbon gives you something known by the technical name "spaghetti numbering."

Otherwise, you can apply the Heading styles with keyboard shortcuts:
  • Ctrl+Alt+1
  • Ctrl+Alt+2
  • Ctrl+Alt+3
If you need shortcuts for more levels, you can create them or use a template that has them:
Heading Style Keyboard Shortcuts Add-In for Headings 4-9

In the Multilevel List dialog box, you select the "Legal style numbering" box to force Arabic number format for level 2. The built-in "Article I ... Section 1.01" format in Word's list gallery illustrates the principle.

See Charles' reply for the details on setting up the heading numbering properly.
