Question Page numbers in different positions

All,

I would like to add page numbers to a document I have. This bit is easy.

The hard bit is that I would like each page number to be further across the page as I can then take a pair of scissors and cut the first page across to the number 1, the second page to the number 2 etc all the way to the end. That way, with the doc printed and put together, I can see all the page numbers at the bottom and its easy to select which page I want.

The doc is currently 14 pages, but I can see it getting to 20 maximum

Ideally the page number would have a cut here dotted line as well - but that would be gravy.

Any ideas cos I am stumped and I can find nothing in the usual repository of all knowledge (google)?

The only way I can think of achieving this is to insert a Section Break (Next Page) for each page you have; go into the footer to insert your page number; unlink from previous so you can start modifying the indent or tab for the location of your page number; then format your page number to continue numbering from the previous section.

This will fall apart though if you have more than one page per section, depends on how keen you are to see all the page numbers along the bottom.

Cheers

I thought you might be able to do it with the advance field but it doesn't seem to work
{Advance \r {=10*{Page}}}{Page}
but for some reason, the inner part {=10*{Page}} converts to a number but the \r won't treat it as one.

Putting on my lateral thinking hat, every page should have all the same numbers across the bottom. Then when you cut of the section to reveal the relevant page, you will remove all subsequent numbers (as if they never existed).

This would give you the view you wanted when the pages are all closed. But if you reveal turn over some pages, you will see the earlier numbers counting up to that point. Hmmm. My lateral thinking hat is broken.

Putting on my labour-intensive hat, I would print the pages one at a time after changing the footer to increase the indent to match the page number indent required. Automating this with a macro would be possible but still just as labour-intensive for a one off solution.

Its the labour intensive bit I am trying to avoid. I have an alternative of using sticky fluorescent tabs instead - but they have the disadvantage of effectively widening the page - so it is now larger (effectively) than the page size

I am indeed currently printing all the numbers at the bottom of each page in a reasonably large font size. Its not ideal - but its the best so far

Sean
