Changing default margins
I have followed MS Office instructions: I click on Layout, Margins, custom margins, make the change, then click the "default" button. I get a warning that I will be changing the "Normal" template and I click OK. Next time I open a new blank document the margins are not the new default I just made, but the original ones.
Any idea why the default margins in a "blank document" are not changing when I do this? Thanks. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 11-16-2018 at 06:53 AM. Reason: Mark as solved |

How are you opening the new document?
Right-Click on your desktop > New Word document? That uses the Word defaults, not your normal template, for the new document. Instead, start Word and press Ctrl+N. |

Thanks for your quick reply Charles. When I open word, a screen comes up in which I have to choose what kind of document I want to open, and I have to choose "blank document" (or another document option) to move on.
Is there a way to bypass this screen so I can click "Ctrl-N" instead? |

Turn off the setting in File > Options > General > Show the Start screen when this application starts

Thanks for your instructions Guessed, did what you said and now Word opens directly to a blank page.
When I tried pressing Ctrl+N however, the new page that opened still had standard margins, not the new default ones (.5") that I had specified before clicking set default. I tried setting the default one more time, closing and reopening word, then typing Ctrl+N, but the new document still has the standard 1" margins. Any other suggestions to set my default margins so I don't have to change them every time? Thanks. |

If you bypass the Start screen, you will have a new document based on your normal template. If you click on blank document, you will get a new document based on your normal template. |

I am making headway, but not quite there. Here is where I'm at:
When I open Word, it goes straight to a blank page. If I change the margins to .5", and save as default, each additional document I open using Ctrl-N has .5" margins. However, when I close word, even if I save all the documents, the next time I open word the blank page it opens to has 1" margins, and if I type Ctrl-N, each new document has 1" margins. So it seems like I lose my default margin change to the Normal template every time I close Word. Is it possible to make it permanent? |

I should clarify that I am not clicking on blank page anymore.

I don't rely on clicking Default buttons in Word to make changes to my Normal template and it sounds like you shouldn't either.
OPEN the Normal.dotm template contained in your %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates folder and make your page setup changes there directly. Make sure you don't simply double click this file since that doesn't actually open it (check the filename in the status bar to confirm the filename is Normal.dotm). Once you are happy with that file, save and close. Then try again to see what happens in your new documents.

WORKED!! Guessed I opted to try your suggestion and changed the template manually, now my Word opens directly to a document that is ready to go!
Thanks Guessed and Charles for all of your suggestions, I really appreciate it! |
