Default Page Numbers adding pages

How do I get word to add pages numbers without adding pages? When i add page numbers at the bottom of the page (page X of Y) my two page document turns into three pages with only one line of text on the third page. I can clearly see that there is ample room for the page numbers before I add them. I would like to possibly add the page numbers in front of the text/images without adding a header and or footer.

Your description suggests you're putting the page numbers in the document body instead of the footer - which is where they belong. What is your aversion to using the footer?

When I select the page number tab and then page number > Bottom of page > page X of Y, Word automatically adds the page number to the footer. This creates extra pages for me. I do not care where the page numbers go. I want to add page X of Y and not add another page with one or two sentences on it.

Go into the footer and delete the paragraph break Word inserts after the 'Y' part of the 'Page X of Y'. You can do this by pressing Ctrl-End in the footer, followed by the backspace key.
