How do I change default paragraph spacing in Word 2000
Hi;
My elderly dad is still running MS Word 2000. He is a language translator. We have been quite frustrated attempting to change the default paragraph spacing for the normal style. The spacing seems to default to insert space above and below each line which is started with hitting the enter key (new paragraph). We can remove the space by selecting the paragraph(s) or the entire document and going to the paragraph format tab, but each time a new document is started, or even when a new page is added to the current document, the paragraph spacing returns to the default. I did a Google search, and apparently I need to change the paragraph settings in the Style that he is using. So, if this is the 'normal' style, then I would go to styles and make the changed there? But making changes to the normal style is going to cause changes in other styles, which use the normal style (trickle down). I don't really think that would be a problem, since my dad never changes the styles anyway. But if I want to do it right, would I just create a custom style, based on the normal style, make the changes to it, and then set that custom style as the default for all documents? On my own PC (Windows 7), I use Office 2010, and I see that when I open the paragraph dialog, there is a button at the bottom to make the settings default. But this button is not available for paragraph formatting in Word 2000. I realize that Word 2000 is almost 20 years old, but my dad is too old to learn a completely new version of Word. Besides that, his computer is running XP and doesn't have enough "horsepower" to run a newer OS or version of Word. Any suggestions? Thanks Ultrarunner |

I am a big fan of using the Normal style and would recommend that rather than using a custom style. If your Dad never changes styles then why would it matter if there are styles 'based on' Normal that you don't want to change.
You are right that he doesn't need to learn a new interface if Word 2000 is still going strong but he should have a basic understanding of styles and you should be setting up his Normal.dot template so that his new documents already have the base style configured to suit his requirements.

You can safely modify the Normal style on your father's installation so that its Spacing Before and Spacing After are both set to zero. Also change the Line Spacing if required.
