Senders is on a distinguished road
Default Change name in navigation pane

Hi,

I'm creating headings in the navigation pane, however, the heading that shows in the navigation pane is the text that is written on the page. For instance, if I use a heading to style some text "Hello" this shows in the navigation pane to match, along with it being centered. I'm trying to figure out how to rename that heading on the pane to say "Prologue" and have it on the left instead of matching identical to how it is on the page.

I see "Rename" when I right click the style template I used, though this only changes the name of the heading, not on the navigation pane also.

Thanks.

The Navigation pane is designed to display the text of heading paragraphs. There is no way around that.

Your described requirement makes it sound like you are delivering the file to end users who plan on using the Navigation Pane to get around. The number of Word users who do this is only a very small percentage of the total number of users so it is hardly worth getting wrapped around the axle over this issue.

However if you actually deliver the file as a PDF, you can rename the bookmarks (Acrobat's term for what Word calls the entries in the Navigation Pane) to not necessarily match the headings on the page. Acrobat users are far more likely to navigate the document with the bookmarks pane showing and this is a much better format for a group of users who are outside your organisation because you don't know what versions of software they have.
