Can you attach a document to a post with just the TOC and some representative headings? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

Now I've got it working. I just rechecked it and found that I had put a forward slash instead of a backslash. After correcting, it is working as you described.

Is there a way to selectively decide which chapters I would like to appear on two lines like this, and which I would like to keep on the same line together? Longer titles should have the Hindi title above and the English below on separate lines as per this current design, whereas chapters having very short one- or two-word titles do not need separate lines. In these cases, the Hindi title can be followed on the same line by the English title, then the dotted line to the page number.

That's just a matter of you choosing whether to have a manual line break in a given heading or whether to run the Hindi and English 'headings' together on one line.

All the Hindi and English lines have to appear on separate lines in their respective chapters though, and for that there will always have to be a manual line break (or else a carriage return, which creates a problem in the TOC).

It is only in the TOC that I want short headings to appear together on the same line. Not at the beginning of the chapters.

Is there a way for me to manage this?

It might be possible to do something using a tab with tiny left-aligned & right-aligned tab-stops in the headings concerned instead of manual line breaks, but you'd need to be careful with the TOC Style, too, to insert a right-aligned tab stop where it will both allow for the longest 'short' Hindi heading to appear with a space between it and the corresponding English heading without also causing the longest 'short' English heading to wrap to the next line. See attached demo.

I am experimenting with de-linking the TOC so I can format it freely to my liking. I am finding that even after de-linking and converting the TOC to text, if I change the font size (pt) of one line in the TOC, it changes the font size of the entire TOC. Is there a way to change the font size of one line only? For example, if one chapter title is a bit longer and I wish to make the font of that line smaller, can I do so without changing the font size of the entire TOC?

Yes, modify the TOC Style for that particular line to no update automatically. I advise against doing this. I would recommend creating a new style instead and applying that.

So for the sake of learning, let's say that of 50 chapters in the book, in the TOC some will be listed in 9 pt, some in 10 pt, some in 11 pt, and some in 12 pt. What would be the best way to achieve this? Are you suggesting to create a new style for each of these? And if so, would these styles be under the category of TOC or would they just be completely separate from the TOC style?

Ideally, you use a different Heading Style for each of your heading variants and let the corresponding TOC Styles pick those up automatically. You'd then format each TOC Style so the corresponding headings appear correctly in the Table of Contents.

In follow up to the above, I am preparing to do my final version of the TOC. I create it by typing "TOC", selecting it and doing CTRL-F9 to make it a field, then F9 to update the field.

When I create the TOC, I get the TOC but it is not in the format I need. Of the 60 entries, some show up in bold and some not (none should be in bold), the pt size and font selection are not proper, and there is no number at the beginning of each entry. I can take care of all this manually by de-linking it [CTRL-SHIFT F9] and then editing in the needed changes. But I am wondering, would it be difficult to set this all up via styles?

Here are the needed items:

1. All bold needs to be removed
2. Each entry in the TOC, that is to say each line, has both a Hindi chapter name and English chapter name. The Hindi name needs to be in 10 pt. Nirmala UI font, whereas the English needs to be in 11pt Times Sanskrit font.
3. The Hindi name and English name need to have a slash (/) placed between them so as to separate them. In the chapter no "/" is needed as the two titles are on different lines, but in the TOC this "/" is needed.
4. Each chapter needs to have a chapter number which starts out the line.
5. The first five listings (Preface, Editor's Note, etc) in the TOC will not be numbered. And they will be separated by a line space from the remainder of the entries.
6. Entries which exceed one line in length, when they wrap around to the second line, the second line should be indented.

1. Formatting of a TOC is controlled by the TOC styles.
2. Direct formatting applied to the headings that are the basis of the entry (not through a paragraph style) will usually be applied in the TOC entry (i.e. if Bold is applied directly to the text rather than through the style).

Thanks -- you've referred me to that article before. I am concerned though, as to whether all the points I've listed here can be solved by styles and by the content in her excellent article as good as it is. If even one of the above -- such as managing separate fonts for Hindi and English -- cannot be solved by styles, then I will have to delink the TOC to take care of this manually.

---------

I've just read through the article you reference by Suzanne Barnhill, and of the points I've mentioned above, there are several for which I do not see a solution: Hindi and English with different fonts and pt sizes, inserting a "/" between the Hindi and English titles, starting the chapter numbering only after the fifth chapter (the first five--Preface, Editor's Note, etc--are not numbered chapters in the book). The last of these may have a solution which I missed, but I did not see anything for the others. If those cannot be solved via styles, then I'll have to delink the TOC to finish my work anyway, so might as well just take care of the above points manually.

Reviewing the points I listed, it would be really helpful if you could let me know if you think they can all be solved via styles.

I doubt you'll get different point sizes in the TOC but, even in the sample TOC attached to post #21 shows that the TOC can reproduce the different fonts.

As for the '/', you can only get that if you add it to the actual heading.

Any chapter numbering you want to appear in the TOC must also appear in the relevant Headings

Text wrapping in the TOC, with indents, is easily managed by formatting the TOC Styles correctly. See: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...html#post52345

All the needed changes I mentioned in the above points are easily achieved by delinking the TOC. Would have been nice to do it in a systemic way, but doesn't sound like it is going to work. I haven't put a chapter number in the chapter names at the beginning of each chapter, but I need that to appear in the TOC. I need a pt difference between Hindi and English. Once the TOC is converted to text, these things are easily done.
