Going a little crazy with Styles and Numbered Lists
So I have this big document where I had previously applied styles.
In another document, I created new styles for my company and I have checked them. The Heading styles are all correctly set to the correct topic level... so I have 1.AaBbCc and it's set as topic level 1, 1.1.AaBbCc and it's set as topic level 2... 1.1.1.1.AaBbCc and it's set as topic level 4. Saved all these and other styles as a new Theme. Imported theme to the Big Document mentioned in the first sentence. Now, first weird thing... all the Header styles are correctly numbered in the preview, except for TitleD... it's shown as JUST AaBbCc. And indeed. When I select it, I do not get the numbering. And when trying to put numbering in front, what I get is 1.! Or 1.1.1.1. if I try to add more levels. But looking this same style details, it is still a level 4 style. Funny thing is that the list doesn´t seem to be broken, because it's number 7.5.1. If I use the Level 3 style, I get a 7.5.2. If I use level 1 style, I get a 8. It's just the level 4 style that is broken, as if it doesn´t recognize the previous numbers. the whole themes and styles thing seems a bit of a mess on Word. You should be given the option to add themes or styles or replace them. And if names did not match, then select which previous style would be replace by what new style. this document seems to have tons of styles, most unused. |

Themes are the basis for some styles but contain no styles. They contain fonts and colors.
QuickStyle Sets contain some styles. See How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly |

Outline numbering is always a bit fragile and the style definitions don't contain the full outline numbering settings so importing styles is only part of the puzzle. I would go to document where the outline numbering is set correctly. Put your cursor in a Heading 1 paragraph and turn on macro recording. Then open the 'Define new Multilevel List' dialog. Close it again and stop the macro recording.
Once that is done, you can run that same macro in any document where the numbering isn't correct to reset all 9 levels to the same settings. If the style definitions are set correctly but the numbering still doesn't look right, press Ctrl-Q to reset the paragraph formatting to the style definition including the paragraph numbering.
