Default Using styles without changing direct formatting

Hello,

I hope you guys could help me, because I could not find any help online. I have my 160+ pages of my master thesis, but I imported it from Open Office and... the formating in some areas went nuts. I would like to apply style to a paragraph, but I can't figure out how to use a style without it changing my italics (book names and stuff) and there's waaaay too much of it to change it manually. Could you please help me?

Thanks in advance!

In Word, if less than 50% of the text in a paragraph has direct font formatting (such as bold or italic), that formatting will be retained even if you apply a different paragraph style. In other words, you should be fine. Just in case, you can test this on a copy of your document.

fwiw, I'd use a character style for citation elements such as book titles … not just a local override ;-}

Good point. It may not help in this case, though, unless editors of the document have used character styles consistently. :-)

Working in a structured environment, I would automatically use a <cite> element for a book-title: a character style seems like a reasonable alternative, though not something I would presume to remind an MVP about :-}
