Using styles without changing direct formatting
Hello,
I hope you guys could help me, because I could not find any help online. I have my 160+ pages of my master thesis, but I imported it from Open Office and... the formating in some areas went nuts. I would like to apply style to a paragraph, but I can't figure out how to use a style without it changing my italics (book names and stuff) and there's waaaay too much of it to change it manually. Could you please help me? Thanks in advance! |

In Word, if less than 50% of the text in a paragraph has direct font formatting (such as bold or italic), that formatting will be retained even if you apply a different paragraph style. In other words, you should be fine. Just in case, you can test this on a copy of your document.

fwiw, I'd use a character style for citation elements such as book titles … not just a local override ;-}

Good point. It may not help in this case, though, unless editors of the document have used character styles consistently. :-)

Working in a structured environment, I would automatically use a <cite> element for a book-title: a character style seems like a reasonable alternative, though not something I would presume to remind an MVP about :-}
