Default Can't save an edited word doc

I have Office Pro 2003; when I open a saved word document & edit it, like adding text & highlighting the section edited, it won’t let me save it; I have to give it a different name. What’s up?
I’ve spent at least an hour looking/Googling & no luck.

Problem solved; I had been inadvertently trying to save as a 'word template' instead of a 'word doc.' Vision issues!!
