Question Adjusting width of one column

This is kind of a two part question. I have a table in my Microsoft Word document and have made one of the columns a numbered list. That column, however, automatically puts an extra margin or amount of padding on the non-justified side. Because I have limited space, I have tried making that column width as small as possible, but I still end up having more white space than is needed. I would like to eliminate some of that white space (margin, padding, or what ever) without having the numbered list clipped. Is that possible?

Secondly, As I enter data into my table, I find I need to adjust the width of one column, which inevitably effects the width of the column next to it. Usually I want a different column to have it's width effected, not the one next to it, so I end up having to adjust each column one-by-one, until I get to that column that I want effected, which is very tedious. Is there a way to adjust the width of one column while, in one step, not effecting the width of the column next to it, but the width of another column instead?

This has to do with the paragraph formatting within the column. It is shown on the ruler. Select your column and then either:
1. Adjust the indent on the ruler, or
2. Go to the home tab and use the paragraph formatting dialog drop down to get to precise settings for your indents.

You may want to use a paragraph (not table) style for this.

Not that I am aware of. And yes, it is a pain. Perhaps someone else knows a way.

Have you tried holding the Shift key down as you resize the column with the mouse?

Rober2, I see how holding the shift key changes the resizing of the column, but that is not the solution I was looking for. What I was hoping for was something like highlighting several columns and then grabbing the right most column line in that group of highlighted columns and moving the line would result in moving all those highlighted column lines simultaneously. That does not happen, but perhaps you see what I am after now.

At least some of that white space is likely to be due to the table's cell margins. Decreasing the right margin for the whole table, or just for cells in that column may achieve the desired outcome.

First, turn off the table's 'preferred width' setting, if enabled. You can then adjust the width of an individual column without affecting the width of other columns. The flip side, of course, is that your table's with will also change when the change an individual column's width. If you want another non-adjacent column's width to be adjusted to compensate, you can adjust that column's width as a separate action. Thus, you'll only ever need to adjust the width of two columns, at most, rather than stepping through the lot.
