If you open a custom template that was created with 2010 using 2016 and then save it as a template with 2016, does that effectively make it a 2016 template? Seems like it would and if it does there would not be anything left from 2010 except where in the coding it tells it what to do if it is opened in 2010 or 2013, correct?

For the most part, there is no difference between a 2010 template and a 2016 template. It will depend on your layout.

2016 uses a different text rendering "engine."

What is it that you are trying to accomplish?

In doing this, it is vital that you open the template rather than create a new document based on the template. Then use Save As to save.

If a template is created in 2016, is it backwards compatible with 2010? There is a box to check that says Maintain compatibility so assume that takes care of that. But, if using a 2010 template is there anything that will cause any problems for using it strictly for 2016 and 2013? Is there any kind of conversion to put the template through?

This all depends on the template.

  1. Using a 2016 template in an earlier version: Only problem will be features introduced in Word 2016 and not present earlier. Likely, no problems.
  2. Using 2010 template in Word 2016: It depends on the template. All you can do is try.
You can open a Word 2010 template (note OPEN) and use Save As to save it in Word 2016 format. You should see if there are problems. There should be no problems using such a template back in Word 2010.

I seldom convert templates unless I notice a problem with the documents produced by them unless I want to use features only available in a newer version. About half of the templates I currently use are .dot templates.

OK thanks again, I guess we will find out during testing if there are any anomalies.
