Question Word 2016, table of contents

Hey. So I'm writing a paper in word, and I'm using different headings. I have a main heading for each new "part" of the paper, and a heading for subparts of each part. Anyways, the problem comes when I try to use the automatic table of contents. I have used both "heading 1" and "heading 2" on my headings, but out of my 7 headings, only one shows up.. How can I fix this? It's been a problem for a while, and I've tried to open a new document and try again, but it still won't work..

Your description suggests that either:
a) you have not used the Heading Styles for all the headings; and/or
b) your Table of Contents was last refreshed before some/most of the headings were added.

I have used the heading styles for all the headings. The heading that shows up has the heading 1 style, but the three others eith the same heading 1 style still doesn't show up. And I also created the heading after I used all the heading styles, and trying to update it several times but it still won't work.. But thanks for the reply!

Did you apply the Heading Style to the whole paragraph containing the heading?

Nope, just the heading. If the heading for example is "Reflection" I used the heading 1 style only for that word..

For Heading Styles to be picked up in a Table of Contents, they need to be applied to the whole paragraph. If you need to use run-in headings, see: http://wordfaqs.ssbarnhill.com/RunInSidehead.htm. I'd be inclined to use the Style Separator approach discussed in the article.

But how do I apply a heading style to a whole paragraph? Won't the ebtire paragraph show up in the TOC then? And if that's the cause, why is one of my headings showing up in the TOC and not the rest? I''ve done the exact same thing when applying all the heading styles..

Precisely, which is why I also directed you to the link for run-in hradings.

Presumably because, in that case, you did apply the heading Style to the entire paragraph.

To clarify:

If you select text and apply a linked style to it, you get a character style without any outline level included. That is, the paragraph style is not changed. The character formatting is changed but not the paragraph formatting. I really dislike this and turn this "feature" off.

It helps to display the non-printing paragraph marks. Showing non-printing formatting marks in Microsoft Word

If, rather than selecting text, you simply click inside a paragraph and apply a style, the entire paragraph receives that style. In the case of heading styles, that means an outline level is applied that is picked up by the TOC field.

It is possible to have two or more pieces of text that Word considers to be a paragraph inside of a single logical paragraph (a run-in-head). That is, it reads and prints as a single paragraph but Word sees more than one for things like the Table of Contents. The tool to do this is called a Style Separator.

If you are going to be using Word for your work, I suggest spending a bit of time learning it. It is, unfortunately, not that intuitive. It is logical. If you learn the way Word works, it makes sense even though it may not be the way you would expect without that underlying knowledge.
