Need help formatting manuscript in Word
Hello,
I have a heavy task ahead of me. I need to take a manuscript in Word and transpose it to a PDF. The PDF needs to have a special formatting that isn't there in the Word document. I'm linking to an example of the formatting that I need in a PDF book: http://www.mm-theory.com/The_Nuts_an...-_Volume_I.pdf This PDF book is not the one I need to format, but the formatting needs to be exactly the same. The book I'm linking to is Volume I of a 3 volume series. The PDF I need to format is Volume II. I started out transposing the Word version of Volume II to PDF from scratch. I opened Adobe Acrobat Pro XI and started creating pages. I transposed each paragraph one by one (the only way I know how in Acrobat) and quickly learned this is an extremely tedious process. I started a thread over at the Adobe community here: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2445321 The response I got is that this is NOT the way you create a PDF book. Acrobat was not meant to be used this way (creating books from scratch like this). The suggestion was that I ought to do the formatting in Word and then simply print to PDF. That's why I'm starting this thread. Looking at the attached PDF, you can see various formatting requirements, which are as follows: * Footer needs to have that purple horizontal rule. * Footer needs to display the current chapter. * Header needs to display the book title. * Every odd page needs to have a left margin larger than the right margin. * Every even page needs to have a right margin larger than the left margin. The first three items I can *probably* figure out on my own (tho I've already tried the purple horizontal rule and have yet to figure out how that's done). It's the last two points I'm wondering about. How does one alternate margin sizes from even to odd pages in a Word document? I would appreciate an answer to this, and more generally, answers to how to accomplish all the requirements listed above. Thank you very much. |

You can set the border color. Quote:

If you want different header/footer content on left and right, use the different odd and even setting in the headers/footers. |

Thanks Charles, these tricks work flawlessly.
There's one more trick, however, that I'm not sure how to accomplish. I need to have the page number in the footer as well as the chapter title. When I add the page number, however, it replaces the styleref. I'm using this guide here: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...5-8ffed9573132 I need the footer to look just like in the PDF I linked to in my first post: How can I add the chapter titles AND the page numbers in the footer? Note that the page numbers require the following: * They need to start on a specific page other than the first page. * They need to be placed underneath the chapter titles in the footer. If I can figure this out, I'll have everything I need, and you will have saved me months, maybe even years, of work. |

Read about page numbers. This is important if you are going to use Word much.
Page Numbers in Word 2007-2016 There are at least three ways that Word gives you to insert automatic page numbers. The one they make most obvious is often the wrong way. Insert > Page Number and then in a location. That will always replace the current header or footer! I almost never use it. Insert > Page Number > Current Location will put one wherever you could be typing text. However, unless that is in a header or footer, it will only appear on the current page. Alt+Shift+P will insert a page number formatted in the Page Number character style at the current location. The cleanest way to insert one at the current location is to press Ctrl+F9 and then type page and then press F9 again. Another method (seldom used) is Insert > Quick Parts > Field > Page. That also inserts a Page field and lets you set formatting options. If you start doing anything different with headers or footers, that can change the page numbering display. Starting on a specific page - simplest way is to have that page be the beginning of a new section and format the page number to restart at 1 there. Sorry, my inner geek grabbed the keyboard. Well, Charles, with these techniques I should be able to complete formatting volumes II and III in a matter of months, not years. If I'm lucky, maybe even under a month. Thanks so much for your help. |
