Annoying Alt shortcut. How to get rid of that?
Hello everyone,
Could someone suggest how to get rid of annoying Alt key shortcuts. When I press Alt key I want nothing to happen. I am really sick of that. Biber P.S. Added pic for better understanding what I meant. Last edited by Biber; 01-27-2018 at 02:04 AM. |

There are literally dozens of Alt key shortcuts. You should learn to use them and leave the Alt key alone otherwise. In any event, the Alt key shortcuts only display if you hold the Alt key down on its own for a second or so; they don't show if you quickly press whatever other key you want to use in conjunction with the Alt key.

You can't get rid of the ones that pop up the Ribbon shortcuts, they are a part of the Ribbon. If you learn to use them, they can be quite handy.
As Paul said, there are a lot of true shortcuts that use the Alt key as well. If you are using one of those, the keypress has to be almost simultaneous. The one I probably use the most is Alt+F9 which toggles the display of field codes. Function Keys in Word 97-2016 |

Please don't suggest me to do some settings in Windows. The Windows is OK, and it has nothing to do with this awful drawback in MS Word 2013. I did some search on the web and I would say that quite a lot of people are facing with that issue and asking for solution. True, I did not learn any working solution on that issue. So I tried to write here. P.S. It's impossible that there's no solution for MS Word that just disables Alt key when it isn't necessary.'Drawback' is not the word. Biber |

It is disabled when it isn't necessary - which is whenever you don't hold it down on its own!!! The Alt key is a Windows, key, not just a Word key. It's been there since before the Windows OS ever became a gleam in Bill Gate's eye.
Exactly how do you suppose Word would know "when it isn't necessary"?

P.S. I think you should read posts more carefully and at least try to belabor the point. And in case when you haven't anything useful to suggest, or you can't realize what OP meant in its post. It would be polite just say nothing. Biber |

Or change the keyboard shortcut in Windows for switching languages. I repeat, in the Ribbon versions of Word, there is no way to disable the Alt tooltips for the Ribbon. They were not in earlier versions of Word because there was no Ribbon. If you want to use a Ribbon version of Word, get used to it. |

Anyway thanks for inputting. Bingo! There's a partial solution. Did on analogy. One guy did that to disable alt+s for Outlook. The same situation, he was sick of ribbon shortcuts. A link to https://social.technet.microsoft.com...um=officeitpro Did comparison with this: https://superuser.com/questions/5752...ribbon-keytips I just figured it out for Word 2013, because previous variant was not working for my OS. Here is script for Win7 registry related Word 2013 I used. Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Word\DisabledShortcutKeysList] "KeyMod1"="18,16" Currently I'm testing that. It's not stellar, but I'm satisfied. Could not attach .reg file for automaticall installation. For manual insatallation, it would be better to ask somebody from IT department of your organization or who has clue about how to make changes in Windows registry. FWIW I work with several languages in Windows and while the ALT key will pop up the Office ALT key prompts if you hang on to it, if when switching languages you either use both keys together or ALT followed very quickly by shift the ALT command prompts do not pop up. It is only a nuisance if you press ALT then dither about wondering which key to press next.
With Windows 10 you can switch languages using the Windows Key + Space which doesn't involve the Alt key at all.

Didn't the men say thank-you too?

Nope. The male part of our staff has nothing to do with MS Word.

We solved it
We all gave up moments before hitting the gold. To ultimately disable the ribbon when switching language with shift+tab, you need to insert this into cmd: REG ADD HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\offi ce\16.0\word\disabledshortcutkey list /v KeyMod1 /t REG_SZ /d 18,4,16 or create a .reg file with Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\offi ce\16.0\word\disabledshortcutkeyslist] "KeyMod1"="18,4,16" This works as of February 9th, 2024. The decade long question has finally found its' answer. We may rest now, my brothers and sisters.
This solution works for all office products. |

Are you adding language switching as well? Are there any side-effects? Please consider posting this as a separate suggestion in the Windows forum. |
