formatting page number in book footer
Houston, I have a problem. It should be simple to solve but I can't quite figure it out after an entire day of tinkering.
I managed to format a 500-page book, complete with left headers for the book title and right headers for chapter titles. It looks quite good -- a small miracle. Here's the problem. When I go to insert page numbers in the footer, they appear on every other page. When I get them to appear on every page, somehow it completely messes up my headers, which I don't want to change. I'm not trying to do anything fancy, just consecutive number starting on page 9 as number 1, right to the end of the book. I'm completely baffled. I thought I had tried everything, but obviously I'm missing something. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 12-28-2017 at 12:22 AM. Reason: Mark as solved |

A document has three header ranges for each section, it seems you are using two of them (odd and even pages). You need to insert your page number fields in each, formatted as you require them with whatever text you require.
You will need a section break at the end of page 8. Open the footer view and you will need to ensure that the section following page 8 is not linked to the previous section. You will need to copy the footer from the section where it remains to the footer from where it has now disappeared. You page number field (CTRL+F9 and type PAGE between the brackets) goes in both odd and even footers of the following section. Set the start number to 1. I appreciate I have glossed over the detail, but it should be obvious if you understand that each section has separate odd, even (and first page) footers (also headers) available and these are linked by default. So that link must be broken between the section where you want the footer to appear and where you don't and that breaking the link also prevents the footer from carrying on, so you need to copy data common to both section footers from to the other section footers.

You have separate even and odd headers. That setting also applies to the footers. (It is a document setting for both headers and footers.)
You need your page numbers inserted in the footers where they are not currently. Go to a footer that has your page numbers. Copy the contents of that footer. Then go to one that does not and paste there. You can change the layout if you want. Header/Footer Settings Recap See also Numbering Front Matter (Ribbon) |
