Default Combining elements such as 7 + ~

Hi,

This is my first new thread post. Years ago, it was easy to combine two elements such as making an artistic French # 7 using the tilde. It was like this: combining, insert, field, equations, formulas, eq, options, switches, etc. That was 20 years ago using Word 95. hahaha Today, this machine uses Office 2007 on a W10 platform and I'd love to know how to do this again. Word 2007 has hidden these or eliminated them.

Thanks so much.

John

You can still use exactly the same field coding, The dialogue for inserting the field codes can be found under Insert|Quick Parts|Field.

Another alternative may be to use a font with the characters you want.

Hi Charles, I used to combine the tilde with a 7 to make a stylized French seven.

The switch I used 20 years ago in Word for Windows '95 { \0 } no longer exists. Neither does the filed icon which I am unable to keyboard in here. A lad in tech support told me to get the latest version of Office, but, I am unable to fork out the loot for subscription on an annual basis as a senior on fixed income. So many changes with the dudes in Redmond, for seemingly no other reason than page appearance.

AFAIK, no \0 switch has ever existed - and I've been using Word since well before Office 95. There is a \O switch for the EQ field, however.

There are three easy ways of achieving a combined 7~ appearance:
1. Type the 7~ then format the character spacing for the 7 as condensed, to 1/2 the point size (e.g. if you're using 12pt text, format the 7 as condensed 6pt);
2. Insert an EQ field, coded as {EQ \O(7,~)}; or
3. Insert an ADVANCE field, coded as {ADVANCE \l #} between the 7 and the ~, with the # equal to to 1/2 the point size (e.g. if you're using 12pt text, use 7 {ADVANCE \l 6}~).

Note: For item 2, depending on your PC's regional settings, you may need to use {EQ \O(7;~)} instead of {EQ \O(7,~)}.

I am unable to say what was in Word '95 or what wasn't. I have the path written down from what was used 22 years ago. I do not see the \0 in options under EQ. Again, I am using Office 2007 on a W10 platform. I will, however, try your path and thanks for adding it.

If you go to Insert|Quick Parts|Field>Field names:EQ>Field Codes>Options, you'll see all the available EQ field switches, including the \O switch.

Paul, all I see is this notation: \O0 where the second o or 0 is a slightly enlarged oval. I do not see any option within the field code options without a secondary letter or symbol notation. Thanks for this continued help. ~ John

What you would be seeing there is \O(), not \O0. As in the example I posted, the 7 and the ~ go between the (), with the appropriate separator (comma or semi-colon) between them.
