Different Word page numbering in header and footer
Hi, I got a not too complicated situation to solve: I have a document that is divided into sections. In the header the page number should run (i.e. restart) from 1 in each section At the same time in the footer the page number should be a "global" page number, i.e. the actual page number of the document. Let me explain by an example if not clear: It should e.g. look so: TOP 1,2,3,1,2,3,4,1 BOTTOM 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 I don't want numbers to be entered one by one either in the header or the footer and I guess there should be an automatic solution. Thank you for any advice. I found this thread covering a similar problem but I don't know how to use SET fields as suggested there https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...-document.html |

See Page Numbering and Page Numbering Different in Headers and Footers.
The first link is a step-by-step demonstration of how this can be done. The second gives a download of such a document with another document of instructions. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 11-22-2017 at 07:11 AM. Reason: expand on contents of links |

As I understand some of these fields go in the body of the word document and some in the place where I want the right page number to be displayed. But how? |

The fields are all inserted into the page header or footer, as appropriate.

Could you write me how I add page no. 4 in my example case, where I have Section 1 with pages 1,2,3 and then comes Section 2 with page 1 in the header which should be page 4 in the footer? |

You really shouldn't need any more 'instruction' than appears in the link you've already been given - it's not exactly rocket science.

Also, in the first section you inserted Section { SECTION} I guess it must be there for this scheme to work. What if I don't want that to appear in my document? |

Make sure you copy all of the fields from the footers. Either copying the entire paragraph in each footer (they have different field coding for each Section) or telling Word to display the field codes (which you could do via Alt-F9) will make that easier.

In Section 1 of my document I have only 1 page. In the first page of Section 2 of my document I insert in the footer your code: {={PAGE}+{Section 1}} It should be 2 in my case, instead it gives a syntactical error I'm still asking whether the code { SECTION} in the body of your document is mandatory. |

How about looking in the footer of Section 1 as well...
The {SECTION} field in the document body is of no consequence; it's only there to remind you which Section you're looking at.

Can I define this Section 1 otherwise? |

Here is what I get with your codes simply copied: On the first page footer: page 1 of 11 on the second page (Section 2 page 1) footer Page 7 of 11 - should be 2 on the third page (Section 2 page 2) footer Page 8 of 11 - should be 3 |

OK, now it seems to work (more or less, because on the first page I still don't need the number of total pages in the footer)
Another problem: Your code for Section 2 looks like this: {={PAGE}+{Section 1}+{Section 2}} I'm trying to add Section 3 to continue numbering but it returns a syntactical error for this code: {={PAGE}+{Section 1}+{Section 2}+{Section 3}} What do I do wrong? |

You really do need to pay close attention to both the instructions in the link (https://www.msofficeforums.com/word/...html#post75013) and the structure of the document I posted in this thread.
