Default Suppress Header; NOT Footer

I'm fairly new to using Microsoft Word (2016 version on a Windows 10 machine), and am trying to figure things out as I go. I work with manuscripts doing editing and trying to format them to be ready to go to the printer.

One of the requirements is to have different headers for the even and odd pages. I have that one figured out.

Another requirement is to have no header on the first page of each new chapter. I have figured out that I have to make every chapter a separate section, and that I can go to the header on the first page of each new chapter, and click on the "Different First Page" and that suppresses the header for that page.

My problem is that it also suppresses the footer for that page. The footer contains the page number, and I must have a page number on every page. The only way I can figure out how to have a page number at the bottom of the page is to put it into a footer. I cannot find a separate way to have page numbers.

Can anyone tell me how to suppress the header on the first page of each new chapter, but NOT the footer? I have done quite a bit of searching on this subject, but haven't yet found anything that addresses this specific problem. I will be so grateful for any help I can receive, but please remember you are dealing with a novice. I have a little difficulty navigating through the "ribbon" trying to figure out where things are (I'm much more used to the menu and drop downs). So please help me with simple and explicit instructions.

Thank you very much.

Simply put the page # field into all three footers in the document's first Section, then leave all footers linked to their preceding Sections (Word's default setup).

Default Thank You, but I need more assistance

This looks somewhat simple, but I don't know how to access all the footers in Section One. I didn't even know there was more than one footer. The only way I have figured out how to get into a footer is to click in it. But since I suppressed the header in the first section (for the first page of the section), there isn't a footer on that page. So I'm not sure how to proceed. Can you give me a little more direction, please?

If you configure that Section with the same "Different First Page" and "Different Odd & Even" layout as the other Sections, you could simply press Ctrl-Enter twice to create a 2nd & 3rd page in that Section. Add the footer content to all 3 footers, then delete the pages you just added.

Double-clicking in any of the header areas anywhere in the document should give you header & footer access for all Sections.

Strictly speaking, you cannot "suppress" a header or footer. That is Wordperfect terminology which does not really apply.

You can have a different first page for the header and footer. This is a single setting that applies to both in a given section. If a new section is created, it continues this setting from the previous one.
Header/Footer Settings Recap

You can copy the footer from the main footer and paste it into the first-page footer.
