Inline headings for APA style with TOC and Outline features on Word for Mac
Hello there!
I am trying to figure out how to get the table of contents and outline (in the navigation sidebar) features to work with APA style headings 3, 4, 5 that have to show on the same line as their subsequent body text. This is very helpful for big documents like dissertations. MS Word on Windows apparently has a hidden “style separator” character which you can insert just after the heading to allow for more than one style (heading style + body style) on the same line. The keyboard shortcut is CTRL + ALT + ENTER on Windows. But Word for Mac doesn’t have the style separator command. Online forums say that the best way to do this on the mac is to use CTRL + SHIFT + h to hide the paragraph symbol that creates a new line after the heading style (which then hides the heading from the outline), then insert a “TC” field which manually inserts an entry into the document’s table of contents. HOWEVER, this only creates a duplicate entry in the table of contents and does not add the entry back into the outline. Has anyone else solved the problem of getting table of contents and the outline in the navigation sidebar to work with APA style? Seems like this would be a great problem to solve. Peace, -Patrick |
