Default compatibility mode VS saving to doc as opposed to docx

If I am running office 2007 or 2010 and I create a file what are the differences in these options:

Saving the file as docx

Saving the file as a DOC

Saving the file as a DOCX with the check mark next to compatibility mode....

docx is for 2007 or later; doc should work with 2003 as well. If you may share your files with others, doc would be a better option.

Right. Yes, you can save a doc file as docx file.

Hi Airtas,

The benefit to saving a document as a lower version is that you can open it from a computer that has the less updated version of the program. You can always go back and save it as a .docx, although if you haven't used any of the more advanced features of 2007, it probably won't make much of a difference in how your document looks. How you save the document doesn't "enable" the features because the features available to you depend on what version of Word you are working in. Does this make sense?
