Default Continue numbering issue in Docx format

Hi,

we have a document where it's listnums continuously increment in the next page as well though it should not, this happens only when the DOC file is saved in DOCX format.

I have attached the sample document to reproduce.

is there a solution for this?

Thanks,

I am not experiencing the problem. Using Word 2013. Saved as .docx, closed, reopened. Numbering remains stable. For truly stable numbering, follow the directions at How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly or its predecessor article for earlier versions of Word.

Does this happen if you have Word started in safe mode?

Thanks Charles, Even I too observed that 2013 does not reproduce this problem.
Could you please open it with 2007 word?

Is there a reason that in this sample document (and, I assume your real document) each page begins with "Section Break (continuous)"? Remove it, and see your numbering continue (not restart at 1).

I cannot open in Word 2007. I no longer have Word 2007 on this computer. No problem with Word 2010 either.

Can you open it in Word 2007 in safe mode? Same problem. This is an important diagnostic. Please try it.

JimP, since the numbering is not set up attached to styles, the section break at the beginning of the second page is needed to restart the numbering.

I can suggest linking numbering to styles. Use a separate (perhaps hidden) style for style level one, have your numbers as level 2 restarting after level one.
