Hyperlinks that Do Not Exist in the Original Word Document Appearing in the PDF Document
I am using Microsoft Word 2010 32 Bit to work on my resume. I have a simple document set up, into columns, with my name, address, and email address on top, followed by the titles Objectives, Work Experience, Schooling, and References Available Upon Request, below that. Nothing too fancy. I have my email address hyperlinked so that when a potential employer reads the file on their computer all they have to do is click the email address and it will open up Outlook with the email already in the right place for them.
My big issue is in the PDF document the text underneath my email, the title Objective and my brief mission statement are hyperlinked as well with no blue text or underlining to indicate this. I always send potential employers a PDF version of my resume. I know the title Objective and the brief mission statement is hyperlinked because in the PDF document when I slide my cursor over the text it shows a hyperlink pop-up box and if I click on it it takes me to a blank webpage. This only happens in the PDF document and not the Word document itself. Is there any way to correct this and delete the unnecessary hyperlink? I'm reading online that I have to sign up for a subscription with Adobe Acrobat to be able to change PDF documents. I don't want to sign up for an account and pay a subscription. Can this be fixed in Microsoft Word 2010? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. Last edited by diarrheaofthewprocessor; 01-17-2017 at 11:05 PM. |

If you open the document and press Alt-F9, does the display of the Objective and mission statement change (e.g. to display that they're actually within a field)?

I was thinking about opening up the PDF file in Adobe Acrobat and trying the same method you suggested. I'm confused as to why this glitch only shows up in the PDF version, but the original Word document remains unscathed. EDIT: In the PDF version of my resume, when I hover over the mission statement itself the popup box reads, "mailto:myphonenumbermyemailaddressObjectivesmymis sionstatementinitsentireity.ProfessionalExperience cashier" EDIT: I'm wondering if maybe the fact that I've organized each section of text into columns is causing this glitch in the PDF and not the Word document. I was taught to use columns in my resume in a computer class I took through a job services company. Our teacher explained that having a simple resume divided into columns makes it easier for the eye to read because it allows the eye to move from one section to the other with ease. I've kept this method of using columns in my resume and hiding these columns when I go to export it to PDF or print my resume out. Last edited by diarrheaofthewprocessor; 01-19-2017 at 11:44 AM. Are you using a 3rd-party template to produce your resume? If so, the behaviour may be caused by the way that template works. An ordinary Word document wouldn't do this.

No, I'm using a regular blank word template. I put the columns and everything in myself.

I thought about it. I could try to create a new blank document and start over from scratch. It will take longer but it could have been something I did when creating the document, in the first place, and didn't even realize it. I created the document so long ago. What I do is I organize my resume into subfolders based on the date they were updated and every time I update the document I save it as a new file (new date added to the file title) in a new subfolder. It could be because the document is a hand-me-down of an older document from ages ago.
I never use other templates besides the plain blank template that Microsoft provides, unless I need to. I use word for creative writing, my resume, and references. Unless it's something that requires another template I do it all myself. |

Would it be possible for you to attach the offending portions of the document and PDF to a post (delete/obfuscate anything sensitive)? You can do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

Here is a screen capture of my resume, from the PDF document, with my phone number and email address blocked out. For some reason, my phone number is included in the popup, right after mail to:. My number came right before my email address. My email address is the first text to be hyperlinked in the whole document. I hope this helps you in diagnosing the issue.

Sorry, but screen captures won't do. We need an actual document and the corresponding PDF for analysis.

I'll post the word document and the PDF shortly. Sorry about that.

I have attached the PDF and the original Word document of my resume with personal information changed. I checked to make sure that the PDF version was still having this glitch despite the changes I made and it still is. I hope these documents help you diagnose the problem.

The problem is that your table has some form of corruption that can only be repaired by converting it to text, then converting the text back to a table again. To minimise the work that entails, use Find/Replace beforehand with:
Find = ^p Replace = ^l to join the lines in each cell into a single paragraph with linebreaks.
