Default Field code wierdness in document map

A document I have been using for over a year suddenly started showing the opposite field code setting in the document from that in the document map.

If a field in the document is part of a heading that appears in the document map, then if it is set to show field codes (Shift+F9), that entry in the document map will not show them. If I toggle the field code setting, it will be off in the document and on in the map.

If I select the entire document and repeatedly press Shift+F9, field codes will alternate between on in the document and off in the map and vice versa.

This happened while I was adding some new fields and assigning bookmarks to them. I was toggling field codes on and off until, at one point, I noticed that they were opposite in the map.

Any ideas what I did and how I can fix it?

I can't post the actual document because it contains confidential information, but if it is necessary, I might be able to edit it down to a few lines that exhibit the problem and post that.

It's possible the document has acquired some of corruption. Corrupt documents can often be 'repaired' by inserting a new, empty, paragraph at the very end, copying everything except that new paragraph to a new document based on the same template (headers & footers may need to be copied separately), closing the old document and saving the new one over it.

That didn't work. I edited the document to remove all but a few lines. The simplified document is attached.

The document behaves normally for me. Since repairing it didn't resolve anything, it's possible your Office installation is itself faulty. Since you're using office 2007, try repairing the Office installation via Word Options|Resources|Diagnose.

I ran that twice. The first time, it said it found 1 error and fixed it. In typical M$FT fashion, it didn't tell me anything about what the error was. The second time, it said it found no errors. I've attached screen shots.

I've since discovered that the problem is probably with Word if Office as several other documents have the same problem.

Is there a more global repair app?

I believe I found the problem. It was suggested in this link:

http://mikefrobbins.com/2010/05/10/h...or-on-in-word/

That option was checked. I'm not sure how. But when I unchecked it. The prolbem went away.

Interesting - that's one of the options I tried during testing with your document, but the display between it and the document map remained consistent.
