Default Can I create word wizards with Word 2016 to automate document creation?

I need to create numerous custom RFP documents for the company I work at. I'd like to be able to enter the customer information in wizard input forms, select key sections or text I want and then hit "generate" to have the document generated. We actually were able to do this about 10 years ago, but since that person left long ago we never kept up. That person created exactly what I am asking in this thread using commonly available word tools. This was such a useful option and I am having a hard time finding information on wizards or auto-generation of documents.

Can anybody suggest how I can create my own auto-generated word documents? I see companies offering the service, but I'd prefer to keep this in-house if possible.

The method is called a UserForm. All of the traditional wizards are UserForms.
You can also, as a part of this, employ AutoText or other Building Blocks.

The problem description also suggests that the use of custom building blocks might be appropriate. These can be used without the need for a userform and attendant macro coding. See:

Thanks Charles and Paul for your feedback on this topic. I've clicked through your links and it looks like I have a bit of review to do. I noticed that many of the article links are for 2010 or older versions of work. I'm using word 2016...any anticipated issues?

Ultimately I need to create something that I can share with other members of the company and I don't think ribbon level building blocks would work. I need our staff to be able to pull a particular proposal template for a particular product, enter key information, and then have that template generate. I need to have the ability to be able to change or update text in that auto created document as needed as well. Seems like a strait forward thing that is actually hard to accomplish. Keep the ideas coming and I'll see how well I do at this.

  1. Userforms date back at least to Word 97 and work fine in Word 2016.
  2. The AutoText (building blocks) can be incorporated in the same template that contains your Wizard. The thing is, these can contain formatting as well as text and can be modified without changing the code in the wizard.
You save blocks of text as AutoText. Your userform tells Word to insert them into the document as needed.
