Default Inserting unicode characters that don't exist in MS Word

Hello,
I'm trying to insert the Unicode Character «₵» into MS Word. It is the currency symbol for at least three countries (Costa Rica, El Salvador and Ghana). This symbol «₵» is the one recommended by the Royal Spanish Academy; not the italic slashed «₡» that shows up on Wikipedia.

The unicode for this character (₵) is 20B5. However when I type 20B5 + Alt x, I get just a square. If I get a square, is it because MS Word does not recognize the unicode character? If that is the case, is there another way of going around it?

By the way, I'm using the program «Unicodeinput.exe», MS Word 2003 and Windows XP

-------------------------------------------------------

P.S. I've had this same problem with some other symbols that don't show up for some reason. Even while knowing the unicode, you only get a square sometimes.

The characters depend on the font being used. Are you sure the typeface you are using has that character in its set of glyphs?

Some fonts (typefaces) don't support Unicode, or only partly support it. Evidently, whatever font you're using doesn't provide full Unicode support.

Having typed 20B5 + Alt x, and just gotten a square, you can select the square then use the Font selector on the toolbar to choose a TrueType or OpenType font that looks similar to the one you're already using. If that font provides full Unicode support, IIRC your square should change to ₵ - if it doesn't change, you'll need to retype 20B5 + Alt x.

IIRC is abbreviation for If I Recall Correctly.

Now, instead of typing 20B5 + ALT X, simply type ALT+ 8373. 8373 is the decimal value for the “CEDI SIGN” HTML entity. It is often preferable to use these decimal values because Word automatically chooses to format the typed code with a font that does include the corresponding glyph (character). To find out decimal values for HTML entities, go to http://www.mclean.net.nz/ucf/.
HTH.
