Default Can't continue numbering in the previous format

Hello,

I am having this huge numbering problem in word. On the first page, I have headings numbered from 1.1. to 1.5. If I position the cursor in front of the first heading and write 1.1., Word starts to number headings automatically, so if I go to the end of the heading and press enter, it continues with 1.2., 1.3. etc, so far so good.

Now on the second page I want to number headings with 2.1., 2.2. etc. If I move the cursor to the beginning of the heading and write 2.2., word for some reason doesn't start to number automatically. No matter how hard I try, word refuses to number it that way. I tried every angle explained on the internet, I get results such as 2.1, 3.1, 4.1., or 2.1., 2.1., 2.1. etc. It seems that Word prevents from numbering in the 2.1. and 2.2. format. Why is it not possible to define the sequence of the second number, why can you define only the first?

Many thanks for the help.

Outline numbering is able to get particularly confusing because of how 'customisable' it is. If you used one of the default outline numbering streams with styles then it can be quite simple but once you start customising you really do need to know what you are doing.

The best place to start in learning how this works is probably the late great Shauna Kelly's website http://shaunakelly.com/word/numberin...numbering.html

I long ago turned off most of the "Autoformat as you type" options. This is one of them.

For anything more than simple lists, I use only numbering linked to styles as set forth in How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly
