Default Making an expandable form

Hi

I'm making a form for a service report. These service reports will have one section for each day worked, and subsections within for each activity. The number of days and activities in a day will vary, so I need a way to add days and activities as needed when editing restriction is turned on.

Huh? How can the number of days in a day vary?

English is far from precise. I suspect that both the number of days and the number of activities within any day can vary.

Unfortunately, it is likewise imprecise when describing the task. Which editing restriction is being used? How do you want the user to be able to modify the form?

Lyseo: The task you are trying to accomplish is fairly complex, IMO.

It may be that you will want to use a UserForm to ask your user up-front how many days and how many activities or to modify the form once you have started. These are not minor undertakings. Take a look at Create a Simple Userform to see if this is something you want to tackle. If it is, write back. I suspect that macropod can provide assistance if given enough information.

A simpler, although far less elegant, method is to prepare multiple templates to meet the multiple needs and have the user choose from among the templates.

Also possible, would be to add a new day or new activity. For me, this would be even more difficult.

The number of days in the service report will vary.

The number of activities in a day will vary.

Clear enough?

Yes, I know the task is complex. That's why I have no idea how to do it in MS Word and hence the post in this forum.

I can't ask the user up front to say how many days will be in the report, as these reports are written day by day, and the user cannot know how long a job will last.

The user should not be able to modify the form in any other way than adding days, adding activities in a day, and of course filling in the text fields.

What method are you using to restrict editing?

This sounds like a job for custom quick parts/building blocks, used in conjunction with 'No Changes (Read Only)' editing restrictions and the fillable areas specified as 'Exceptions. See:

My gut feeling says that won't work, but I'm willing to try. I can't do what the first article says though, as I have no "Save Selection to Watermark Gallery" command on my "Page Background" group.

It's right there, at the bottom of the options that become visible when you expand the Watermark dropdown...

OK, my bad. Found it.

I've made a new watermark with my activity section. How would I insert it? When I try to just select it from the watermark section, it adds to the watermark on my page. I need it to add itself inside the table with the other activities.

Please bear in mind that what you're working with is just a demonstration - and only of creating a custom watermark. Watermarks always apply to an entire page and they're not the be all and end-all of using custom quick parts/building blocks.

In that case, you need to create a custom quick part/building block applicable to that; not to a watermark. You can add other reusable elements to the appropriate building block galleries by creating them then selecting the element and using Insert|Quick Parts|Save Selection to Quick Parts Gallery, along with the relevant options offered there. That said, it's not apparent why you'd want to add a textbox inside a table.

You do not need a watermark. That is but one kind of building block. Take a look at AutoText in Automated Boilerplate Using Microsoft Word. You can save a table row complete with content controls as an AutoText entry.
