Default Taming MS Word

Using numbered and bulleted list worked fine until I needed to create a multi-page document with defined sections also called a standard operating procedure. At this point numbered section seemed to get a mind of their own and if you think that was bad should I switch to bulleted list and back to numbered lists things really got messed up.

So now some text in numbered lists are aligned and some is not and in some instances not even format painter comes to the rescue. Conclusion ... I need to find out how to get Word 2003 to behave and somehow I suspect my problem is 80% me and 2o % Bill.

Help anyone? Maybe a good link, a book whatever you can share
THANK YOU.
