Here's the situation:

- I have a full page flowchart (type PNG created in VISIO) inserted in a Word


document.
- I have inserted text boxes over the flowchart with captions to identify specific steps in the flowchart
- I have added text boxes in the margin beside the applicable text.
- I can add the cross-reference to the overlayed text boxes for the figure from inside the text box beside the text.
- Word seems to add the cross-reference okay, but it doesn't appear "active" that is I can't click on the link to go to the text box over the flowchart.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Instead of using textboxes, you could use floating tables. These behave in much the same way, but your cross-references will still work.

I tried what you suggested with floating tables. I may not be using them correctly because I haven't used them before. I can't seem to float the title over the large flowchart itself? Am I just missing a setting in the table properties. I've tested the Text Wrapping and positioning options but still no luck.

You could try clicking on your Visio object and using the 'send behind text' option. With that, it may then be best to have a single table with variable cell sizes floating over the object, so that your text continues to wrap around it the way it should.
