Default Merging different documents in one big document keeping the chapters, figure numbers and tables

Hello ,

I needed to register again .

I want split a big document in smaller sub documents and later merging into a big file.
The sub documents will have chapters , figures and tables,
If I use use the different styles to edit later a table of content, when I will merge into one big file, will the chapters number , figure and table update automatically?

Thanks

If you split the document then recombine it, all numbering etc. should update when you do so. But why are you going through this process?

Thanks for your reply.
I am not splitting the documents. I am writing different word file and ten merging in one bigger.
I am writing a scientific paper
file 1 : Intro
file 2 : matherial and metods
file 3 : results
etc etc

when I copy all in one file, do the photos number, captions and table automatically update?
for example I have 1 img in file one (FIg.1) and I have one img in file 2 (Img.1).
If I copy and paste the text from file 2, not that img is image 2.

OK, but you did say:

Provided you use automatic numbering - and you use cross-references to those numbers instead of typing them when you want to reference a numbered item, the numbers and cross-references should update when the files are combined - at most you might need to press Ctrl-A, F9 to force Word to update the cross-references.

yes, sorry I try to explain better.
When I said I want split a bigger document I meant that I want divide the whole document into many word files as the number of the chapters. Once finished copy and paste in one file.
For cross references do you mean " linking" the imgs with the text using the option in word?

Sorry I am not at work and my Office is in Italian.

That kind of thing, yes. See also Insert|Cross Reference (under Inserisci on your screenshot).

I use the same topic becasue it is about the same document.

I am using EndNote to insert references into my document.
Again, if I am writing in a document , iserting reference, when I merge all the smaller document into a big one, will the reference list auto-update?

Thanks

That depends on how EndNote works - you need to ask its makers about that.
