Default Autofill text in sentences from table

I'm wondering if it would be possible to autofill text with numbers from a table in Word.

For example, if you had a table with the populations of cities within a state, could you write a sentence saying: "The population in Los Angeles is ___."
Can you link the cell in the Word table with the population to the "___" text, so you don't actually have to type? And when you change the cities/populations the sentence would automatically change?

I'd like to know if Word has any built-in functions to do this. Thanks.

You can't do that directly with a table, but it could be done from a content control dropdown. See, for example: https://www.msofficeforums.com/word-...html#post46903

Thank, that's really useful.

One other thing. Could you link numbers from an Excel spreadsheet to a Word table using Mail Merge?

Linking and mailmerge are different things. Word can do either.
