Default Margin change for selected text in Word 7

Hi! I want to use a different margin for selected text in my document. I thought I knew how to do it but I ran into a problem. I am using MS Word 7. My document has 1" margins and I selected a paragraph to have 1 1/2 " margins. What I did was selected the text that I wanted to change. Then I clicked on the Layout tab. Then I choose Margins, then Custom Margins. On the margin screen I changed the left and right margin, then I clicked Apply to: Selected Text. Now I hit OK. The margins did change for the selected text, but the paragraph was moved to the next page. Now I have a half page gap between the text in my document and the selected text. How do I get rid of that half page gap?

Any ideas?

Is there a reason for not just using a different left and/or right indent for the range of interest? That's generally much easier than changing the margins.

Default Selected Margins

Thank you for answering!

Yes! I am formatting for a book. The regular text is one set of margins, but a quote longer than a few lines, needs to be indented for the length of the quote. I have half a half a page of text that needs to have a larger margin on either side.

Try it!

Changing margins adds section breaks, adding much complexity to your document. Indents are paragraph-level formatting while margins are section-level formatting. Margins and Indents in Word

In the screenshot below, the blue arrows indicate the margins. The red arrows, the indents. Indents can be inside margins or outside them.

This can be set in a style and easily applied consistently.

Rich, the method you want to use is one that I would use in Wordperfect. It is not what you want to do in Word.
