Office 2016 for Mac keeps getting the wrong date for the automatic date
So usually i just put in the month and the date then press enter or return then it feels in the date for me. This time when i did that, instead of giving me the correct date it gives me the wrong date. How can i fix this? |

Since Word gets its date & time data from your computer's clock, you should check your Time & Date settings.

Wrong automatic date
Hi Paul, my Time & Date settings are correct, I date my diary entries daily, EG today in the form 2016-09-30, but on entering "2016", Word for Mac 2016 invariably offers the previous day's date, IE yesterday, 2016-09-29, unless I've closed Word & reopened it today.
Trouble is, closing & reopening Word is a long-winded procedure, at least it is on my late 2012 Mac Mini, taking much longer than just correcting the date manually. I've noticed if you use Insert Date and Time, you get the correct date, as you do via some other convoluted ways where presumably the date is coming from somewhere that is on the correct date? Is there anything else I can try to insert today's date correctly and speedily? Thank you. |

Evidently, then, for the auto date created by entering "2016", Word for Mac 2016 on your Mac Mini uses the date Word was started on. That may be a limitation of your system or of Word on the Mac. Either way, not an unreasonable outcome in light of how most users would run Word.
Another way you could create such a date is by pressing Cmd-F9, typing DATE between the braces, then pressing F9. This will create an automatic date that will update every time the document is opened or printed. Other input options for the field include CREATEDATE, PRINTDATE and SAVEDATE, for the different dates those represent. You can also unlink the field (after updating) via Cmd-Shift-F9. Or you could just type the date and be done with it.

Thanks for replying Paul, your comments & suggestions noted.
One thing I should have mentioned, before Word 2016, the correct date always followed after I entered "2015"; also, since upgrading to Word 2016, very occasionally the correct date does appear after I enter "2016", and not after closing/reopening Word. By very occasionally I mean perhaps once every 10 to 14 days. |

If the behaviour is inconsistent, that suggests a faulty Office installation or OS. Repairing either on a Mac is not for the faint-hearted. With Office, you'd need to uninstall & reinstall. For the OS - talk to a Mac specialist.

Thank you again Paul.
I'll uninstall & reinstall Office first, when time permits. |

I haven't checked recently. In the past, Word kept as the current date the date on which it was opened. I seldom keep Word open overnight and never use the autocorrect date. I will keep my eye open for that. I suspect the last time I checked this was with Word 2003.
Word for the Mac is usually, these days, behind Word for Windows. (I remember when Word for the Mac was ahead of Word for the PC, especially before Windows.) |

Office 2016 for Mac date is one day out in the morning
Still having this problem 2 years on.
My computer (Mac Mini) is set to correct date. When I date a document automatically in the morning, it dates it the previous day. When I date a document automatically in the afternoon, it dates it correctly! Suggesting the auto date facility is 12+ hours behind local time - what's going on? Incidentally I'm in UK, currently on GMT. |

Charles, I did read your comment: when I quit Word overnight then the next day it dates correctly; if I simply close it, it doesn't, until the afternoon.
That's Word 2016 on the Mac Mini. The problem with quitting Word is that it can take 5 minutes to re-open, whereas it opens immediately from closed. However, Word on my Windows 10 dates correctly, regardless of morning or afternoon, whether I simply close it (my normal action) or quit it (fairly rarely). As you said, "Word for the Mac is usually, these days, behind Word for Windows. (I remember when Word for the Mac was ahead of Word for the PC, especially before Windows.)" I too remember those days, hence disappointment. |
