Word slows down as file size increases
I have a 47 MB, 430-page document, with LOTS of images (all 220 dpi or less). As it has grown, editing has slowed down. I have 32 GB of memory, have reinstalled Office 2013, and checked for malware. I have Office 2013 for home and student running on Windows 7 Pro. Any thoughts? Thanks. |

Image rendering and the associated pagination calculations inevitably slows down any application. The more images, the greater the impact.
For editing performance, you could switch to draft view or go to File|Options|Advanced>Show document content and check the 'Show picture placeholders' option.

Word slows down
Thanks for the help. Can't use the first one as it changes the page layout. The second one helped some, but only a few of the images were replaced by outline boxes

Changing to draft view doesn't change the page layout; just how the document appears on screen.
Checking the 'Show picture placeholders' option apparently only affects in-line images. You could also uncheck the 'show drawings and textboxes on screen' option, but then you won't be able to see where any floating shapes or textboxes are.
