Word 2016 does not recognise Excel object
I have a new pc running Windows 10 and Office 2016 (32 bit). The following problem is driving me mad:
Since 1999 I have used invoices made in Word with an Excel spreadsheet object embedded. I enter the items to be invoiced in the Excel object, which has always been editable by double-clicking the object and opening it. On the new computer this doesn't work. From the start, double-clicking the Excel object did nothing. I found that by right-clicking the embedded object I got a menu where I could convert the Excel 2003 object into Excel 2016 format. After that I could open it and edit it, as usual. Until today, when all the Word invoices that I had converted as per above suddenly will not open and are not even recognised as Excel objects nymnore. Double-clicking the object I get a message to the effect that "the server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed and that it has not been deleted, moved, renamed, or blocked by policy." When I right-click the object, it is no longer recognised as an Excel object. Instead it is referred to as "Unknown object". The only conversion option now is to convert it to "Unknown object". I have tried making a new (Excel 2016) spreadsheet and inserting it instead of my old invoice spreadsheet. This gets the same result as the old one. I have searched the internet without finding a useful solution and am at my wit's end. Any help would be much appreciated since this is driving me crazy. /Magnus |

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (via Start > Windows Control Panel > Programs > Programs & Features > Microsoft Office (version) > Change > Repair)?

Thanks for replying. I have not tried that. Will I lose any settings etc in Office, Outlook for instance? I will try a repair when I am done with today's work. All the best, Magnus |

No, you won't lose anything. That said, you should make regular backups of your files.

Thanks again for replying. I just went into Control Panel to do an office repair, and now I am really confused. I find two Office entries in control panel, see the attached screen grab.
Why the two Offices? And which one of these entries should I repair? I have had this pc for about three weeks. Initially I installed Office 2007 on it. This didn't work well, so after a day or two I did a complete uninstall and installed Office 2016. I work as a translator (English to Swedish), and my MS Office 2016 is English. I have added the Swedish language pack to it, to get Swedish spell-checker etc. If you could help me with this I would be very grateful. I have no idea why you'd see two entries for Office 2016. Installing a language pack shouldn't make any difference. So I can't tell you which one to repair right now.

So better wait with a repair then? It's odd isn't it, but perhaps that's the way an Office installation shows up when you use two languages?

Apparently your setup is normal for a system with a Language Pack installed. Try repairing the first entry.

The below worked for me
I opened Word 2016 right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator.
Provided my administrator credential (which is different from the one I usually log into my PC). Then the embedded Excel sheet worked fine. Additional information: Previously I had Office 2013 and the embedded Excel was working with my non-admin account. I didn't try to repair Office 2016 which I downloaded and installed from the Office 365 portal. Office version is 64 bit. Hope this info helps. |
