How do I remove a section
I am trying to put a header and footer on my pages.
Pages 1-2 are labeled "section 1". Pages 3-171 are labeled "section 2". The header and footer already appear in "section 3", which are 172-181. I'm a newbie and just trying to figure all of this out. I'm not really even sure why there is a section 2 and 3 as they are pretty much the same and don't need to be broken up. So, is there anyway to just copy the footer & header and put it in section 2 too? Thank you in advance. |

Click the ¶ button on the Home tab to see section breaks as well as other nonprinting marks. You can delete section breaks but note that each section break stores the formatting of the preceding section: newspaper columns, page setup, headers and footers. Therefore, deleting a break may cause seemingly unexpected formatting changes.
For more on sections in Word, see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting...thsections.htm. For more on headers and footers, have a look at http://wordfaqs.mvps.org/HeaderFooter.htm.

I clicked that icon you mentioned but it just put that symbol all over the place. I really don't know what to do from there. Is there any way to copy the header and footer as I have it in section 3 and place the same header/footer in section 2? Thank you.

If you want your earlier pages to have the same header or footer go to the header or footer you want to show up earlier and click "Link to Previous."

The ¶ symbol is a paragraph mark; it stores paragraph formatting (and the final paragraph of a document also stores section formatting for the last section of the document).
A section break is represented by a dotted line and it also states the type of section that follows ("Next page" for example). You can see section breaks more easily if you also switch to Draft view (View tab | Draft).

In section 3, link that to previous.

Manually copy and paste header and footer content between sections would be the easiest fix here. If there are multiple headers (and multiple footers) these must be copied one by one.
The details on what happens when you delete a section break is discussed in the article to which I previously linked.

The other alternative is to go into editing headers and footers and copy and paste from one section to the other.

I went to section 3, selected "link to previous", and it asked me if I wanted to remove header/footer and link to the previous section. I selected yes, and it removed the header/footer from section 3. It did not place the header/footer in section 2.
