Default Issue with adding Hyperlink with no protocol

Hello,

I am currently attempting to add hyperlinks to a Word 2013 document. I select the text, right-click, and type the hyperlink in the "Address" textbox/dropdown. The issue I'm having is that the Web Page I'm connecting to has an issue with the http: in the link address and it takes about three minutes to connect. I've tried to remove the http:, but it keeps getting automatically inserted.

So, is there anyway to insert a hyperlink to a Web Page and not have the http: protocol included? For instance instead of https://www.msofficeforums.com, I'd like to put in www.msofficeforums.com.

Thank You

You could select the hyperlink, press Shift-F9 to expose the field code, which will look something like:
{HYPERLINK "https://www.msofficeforums.com"}
then delete the http:// . Press F9 when you're done to update the field.

Thanks for the tip.

When I try to edit the hyperlink using Shift-F9, after I remove the http:// the link then adds a file path to the front of the url so it is no longer a Web URL but instead a an existing file. When it's clicked it says file not found.

I don't know of a web site that doesn't use the http:// or https:// prefix, though some lack the www. Removing the http:// or https:// prefix invalidates the hyperlink as a URL so far as Word is concerned, though I'm not sure why it would get the filename: prefix instead - that doesn't happen on my system.

Can you think of any setting in Word that would change the Web link to a file link after removing the http:?

No but, then, I also don't know what you expect to achieve by removing the http:// and thereby rendering the link invalid.

In Word 2007, I can paste “www.msofficeforums.com/” as unformatted text, select the pasted string, right-click and choose “Hyperlink…”
The hyperlink is created AS IS without “http://” in front. But when I click that hyperlink from within Word, I am told that it is not a valid URL… Catch-22!
If I enter “www.msofficeforums.com/” in the Microsoft Edge Address Bar, it is automatically changed into “https://www.msofficeforums.com/”. Same thing with Internet Explorer 11.
Only Google Chrome and Firefox reluctantly accept to display the short version of “www.msofficeforums.com/”. But it is obviously converted to the canonical version in the background (the screen tip in the status bar always reads “https://www.msofficeforums.com/”).

Note that you can turn off automatic hyperlinks in the Word Options (Proofing > AutoCorrect Options > AutoFormat As You Type > uncheck "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks").

Thanks everyone,

The issue is that the 3rd party Website that we are linking to takes forever to open if the http:// is included in the hyperlink. If it is removed, it opens immediately.

We had the same issue with WordPerfect, but that software allows for hyperlinks to have the http:// omitted.

Opened from where (e.g. is it functioning as part of your intranet), and with what browser?

The hyperlink is in a Word Document and opens an external page on the Internet. The browser is IE.

Curious. When the hyperlink opens, does it display as https://www.msofficeforums.com, or as www.msofficeforums.com ?

In that case, it's unlikely to be the URL, per se, that is the problem. More likely is something in your organisation's internet connections.
