Headers/Footers not in new document
I am creating a template that uses custom headers and footers. I go through the steps to create and save the template, and then start a new document from the template. I get all the styles but no header or footer, just a blank doc like if I would selected the generic Word template.
More info: I am using a different header on p1. What did I miss/do wrong? Thanks! |

If you placed your headers and footers in the template, they will be there in the new document based on the template. How are you starting your new document based on the template? Double-clicking on the template?
It is quite possible that you saved your new styles not just in your template but also in the normal template. If you did that, they would show up in new documents that are not based on your custom template. |

Same happened to me.
I tried to edit normal.dot/normal.dotm and add header, but I couldn't find it anywhere, even in hidden folders. I also deleted complete MicrosoftOffice 2013 and reinstalled it, but nothing improved. |

Trust me. You do not want headers or footers in the normal template. At a minimum, you will be unable to use the labels and envelopes functions if you do this. See the examples on my downloads page of methods of having headers and footers in a template. In particular, look at the Letterhead AddIn(s) - Default New Document and the Easy New Document Template Package. |

Residual issues...
I think I have fallen victim to your warning about starting template formatting work in a previously used document.
Would you say that I should perform a tactical retreat and recreate my first template from the normaldot template and then copy that template for any variations I will have? Even so, I am still running into funky things like changing a style used in a table in a header and it also creates another table instead of simply changing the font style. (I am becoming increasingly fonder of FrameMaker with each day I work with Word.) |

No. I started work in a docx to begin with (see the post I added). I then made the changes to the headers, styles and saved Style in the Design tab, which led me to create a .dotx file located in \roaming\Microsoft\QuickStyles. I then saved as .dotx to the \Custom\Templates directory. The template showed up when I chose New, went to the Custom tab and double-clicked on the template.
I thought maybe I erred by not saving the Headers in Headers gallery, but after doing so, they weren't added to the gallery (went to INSERT>>HEADER>>SAVE SELECTION TO HEADER GALLERY). |

Header styles are different from heading styles which are different from table styles. You would normally never use a heading style in a header.
Heading styles in Word have a lot of special qualities that make them unsuited for use in a header and very suited for use in the body of a document. Why use Microsoft Word’s built-in heading styles? by Shauna Kelly Understanding Styles in Microsoft Word All formatting in a template should be done using Styles. I never use table styles so I will not pretend to know much about them. |

See Automated Boilerplate Using Microsoft Word. Where can Building Blocks be stored? Word is not a simple program, but then, neither is Framemaker. |
