Appendix field switches
Hi... I'm working on a document and want to refer to "Appendix B" in one of the chapters. Here are my needs:
1. only "appendix B" in text (right now, when fields are updated, the entire title of the appendix reappears). 2. "appendix" needs to remain lowercase. 3. "B" needs to remain uppercase. I'm used to doing the \*Lower switch on things like figures and tables, but those are numbers, so the second character isn't affected. I found this, but I'm not sure what setup needs to happen to be able to use it: { SEQ appendix \* ALPHABETIC } My current setup: I used the "caption builder" (for lack of a better word) to create the appendices' titles, thinking that would help with entering a cross-reference, but it does the same as when it is not done as a caption. (when entering the cross-reference, the only thing that generates something other than "0" is "Heading Text." I don't anticipate the appendices getting moved around, but I hate to manually type in "cross-references" lest things get moved! TIA! |

Is there a reason for not using one of Word's built-in Heading Styles for this, with the word 'Appendix' prefixed to the Heading level number (in alphabetic format, of course)?

I am using the same style for all chapters and appendices (my own as it is the format I'm required to use). But other than that, I don't know how that ties in to an in-text reference.

The format isn't the issue - any Heading Style can be modified to match that. If you use a Heading Style for the appendices, you can insert in-text cross-references to them via Insert|Cross-reference.

So I did the part suggested by Charles, however, my cross-reference is still capitalizing "Appendix"... my style manual mandates lowercase.

You may be able to separate cross reference into two fields, one using the \* lower switch and the other using the \* Upper switch.

I'm just going to write it manually. There's only one, and if we move the appendices around, we'll just have to remember to fix that one reference.

If wanted you can add a hyperlink manually as well. So long as the text isn't changing that should work.

I am moving the appendices around and adding in-text references to them (there are 5 appendices and only one was referred to; I've decided to enforce rules about referring to appendices and in order!) So, should they decide to reject my changes, I need to be prepared for an easy fix to adjust the in-text references.
I've attached a sample of my document that includes part of Chapter 1 and two appendices. Perhaps someone can show me what I need to do instead of just telling me |

Here is one way.
It will require manual editing. I placed a bookmark at the beginning of each of your appendices. Those are not numbered. I added hyperlinks (without hyperlink formatting) to your text referring to the bookmarks in the appendices. You would still need to edit the text in the hyperlinks if you rename or reorder your appendices. I don't know that it is of any help. If you just need the title without the hyperlink, it certainly is not. Word can do a lot, but not everything one might want. Last edited by Charles Kenyon; 11-05-2015 at 03:40 PM. Reason: add file |
