Footer displays in different sections
Hi,
I am using word 2013 and encountering two problems: First Problem: I cannot set a continuous footer for the full document as the footers get divided in three sections. After reading about this problem, I have tried to delete the page sections but that doesn't work. the option "same as previous" from the footer doesn't work either. Second problem: I cannot add the footer + the page section in the format "1 of ..." I would really appreciate your help. Thanks a lot |

Every Section in a Word document has three headers and footers: primary, first page and even page. If your document's page layout has the:
• 'first page' option checked, it will have both the primary and first page headers & footers • 'even page' option checked, it will have both the primary and even page headers & footers • 'first page' and 'even page' options checked, it will have the primary, first page and even page headers & footers in every Section. There is no connection between what appears in, say, the primary header and a first page or even page header. Furthermore, in any given Section, each given header & footer can either continue whatever is in the previous Section's corresponding header or footer or start with content of its own. Your problem description suggests your document's page layout has the 'first page' and 'even page' options checked, plus multiple Sections. The first question to ask yourself, therefore, is whether your entire document (or even any of it) requires that configuration. If not, simplify the page layout to the minimum necessary. Then, if you do need more than the basic page layout without the 'first page' and 'even page' options, plus headers/footers, each of those headers & footers will require their own content.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply, but could you please be more pragmatic? i.e. if the problem is that different footer types are displayed, how do I resolve that? what steps do I need to take in the document itself? Thanks a lot |

As I said, they're controlled by the document's page layout settings. So check those. See under Page Layout (Alt-P)>Page Setup(Alt-S-P)>Layout. The settings can be applied to the whole document or on a 'this point forward' basis.

Hi,
sorry maybe I wasn't clear when describing the issue but I have already tried to set the page layout as "continuous" for the full document but that didn't change anything. In the page layout, path that you mentioned below, I couldn't see anything referring to the different footers as you described them: primary, first page and even. All is displayed is field "Section Start" and if I choose continuous that doesn't make any difference. I amusing word 2013. Are you talking about the same version? Thanks |

I didn't say anything about the dialog referring to footers. What I referred to was options for different 'first page' and 'even page'. Those are most certainly where I described them.

Quote:
Header/Footer Settings Recap The settings are found in the Header/Footer Tools Tab. This is displayed whenever you are actually in a header or footer. The setting to link to previous can be different for each header and each footer in each section. The Different First Page setting applies to both headers and footers and is a section setting. It can be different with each section but applies to both headers and footers. The Different Even and Odd setting is a document setting. |

Without actually seeing the problem document, it can be difficult for anyone to diagnose the issue you're having. Can you attach a document to a post with some representative data (delete anything sensitive)? You do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab at the bottom of this screen.

Hi,
I have attached a printscreen of the footer displaying section_1 and section_2. I am unable to unify those two and indeed from section_2 the page number starts again from 1 where it should be 3. Thanks Regards Nadia |

A printscreen is of little help because what we are talking about are Word structures that may appear the same on a printscreen. Again, these settings may be different in headers than footers and different in different sections.

Your document has only two sections, delineated by a Continuous Section Break before the Table of Contents. All you really need do is delete that and insert a Next Page Section break after the Table of Contents. Having done that, you can then unlink the Section 2 footer from the Section 1 footer so they're independent. See attached. I've even deleted the footer from Section 1 and updated the TOC as a demonstration of this.

Hi,
Thanks a lot for that. It solved the issue for that document. The only thing is that I am not able yet to set a unique footer (only section_1) for the entire document. Regards |
