Default Word cannot start the convertor mswrd632

A little background -- I've automated a few processes with our mainframe, and have a program that ftp's reports and creates *.doc files. This has been working very well for the past few years, just recently started receiving the above error. After some research, it looks like a security patch from MS is the culprit.

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;973904

However, the steps to fix it don't apply--since it requires modifying the registry to allow WordPad to open the files. I'm basically using MS Word 2007 to open the *.doc file, not WordPad. It's worked great up until that security update.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

MS has deprecated the mswrd632.wpc and write32.wpc because they are vulnerable.

So whatever applications that uses thse converters are effected. Even Office word is falling back on these converters so u r facing this issue.

Go ahead and create the registry keys mentioned in the KBArticle of the update

Thanks for the reply. I did modify my registry per the instructions, rebooted, and same error.

Any other ideas?

Can u try with this option. For sure this will work. :-)
    • When a file has the ".doc" file name extension, but the content is a plain text file or another kind of file that is not a Microsoft Word binary file, and that file is opened in Microsoft Word, you may receive the following error message up to three times before Microsoft Office Word successfully opens the file: Word cannot start the converter mswrd632

To resolve this issue, an affected user can unregister the mswrd632 converter by editing the registry as follows:
      1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
      2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wpc
      3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
      4. Click Yes.
      5. Exit Registry Editor.
This change will effectively unregister the converter and disable it for third-party applications and for Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office will use its own text converters to open these kinds of files.

Nirru sorry for the delay, with the holidays and all this kind of slipped my mind.

Anyways, I removed the entry you pointed me to in the registry, and it worked! Thanks again for your help, happy holidays!

Hi all!
I have exactly the same problem, but the tips you have here didn't help. I even used Microsoft's Fix It tool, that delete the register for me, but it didn't help either.
Every forum have the same tip how to fix it, but it didn't work for me.
I hope you can help me how to fix it.

The document is really important, so can you send me a copy of the answer to my email ? : Clickmember@gmail.com

ps. Sorry for my bad english

Default cannot get files converted

Hi, anybody out there who can help?
I did remove the the converter as instructed on this thread, however the file was sent to me as word document, but contains software. Instruction was to rename from .doc to .exe, another file from doc. to .inf

After renaming the files they open as word document, all I see is squares and some letters.

Thanks
