Default Formatting has changed?

I am using Office 2010 on a Windows 8.1 platform. All of a sudden, I can only type text when the tab is in the File setting. I usually use the Home tab, but when I make a change under this setting, the tab setting automatically reverts back to the File tab. I am not able to type any entries unless the tab setting is File.

Also, my line spacing is no longer single-spaced. Under the Home tab, I have line spacing set to single spacing, but it appears to be ignored.

I believe that my most recent Windows Update contained an update for Word/Office 2010, but I don't know if this is the cause.

Thanks in advance!

I have solved the line spacing issue. Evidently, under the Line & Paragraph Spacing tab, the Spacing Before and After have to be set at 0, as opposed to Auto. Setting Line Spacing to "single" does not do the trick without changing the Before and After Spacing to zeros. Why this changed is beyond me!

Lines spacing is about the spacing between lines in a paragraph. Space before and space after have to do with space between paragraphs.

As for the FILE being the active tab, if it were you couldn't type at all. You have hidden the Ribbon. Double-click on Home.

Sir Kenyon --

So simple, even a child can do it. (Evidently, I have not made it to childhood yet.) Double-clicking on the Home tab obviously (now) did the trick. But, it is the type of correction that one would not have fathomed without the existence of a forum such as this. Thank you very much. I must somehow have double-clicked on the FILE tab in error, which route I use when bringing up recently-used files.

Again, my thanks for taking the time to respond to my thread. Problem solved!
