Controlling Widows (single-word lines at the end of a paragraph)
Is there any way to set a minimum number of words for the last line in a paragraph? And if not a native one, maybe some kind of script or automated workaround? Manually fixing these is extremely tedious.
I've seen a lot mentioned about the Widow/Orphan control option for preventing single lines at the end or beginning of a page, however nothing I've seen addresses single-word lines at the end of a paragraph. I've seen at least a few different definitions of widow, so narrowing down a solution has been very difficult. I've attached an example - 'game.' is the widow. |

There is no setting in Word to do that. Although you could force a certain number of words to appear on the last line via the use of non-breaking spaces, that is liable to distort the spacing of the previous line, too.

Thanks for the reply.
I have in the past just used non-breaking spaces in strategic places in the paragraph, but I thought maybe Word would have some function for calculating the word spacing to prevent a single word from appearing alone on a line at the end of a paragraph. I should probably make a feature request. |
