Default Removing space before blank page / page break

Hello,

Can someone please explain how to remove the space (a blank line) that is created after I click page break or insert blank page. It is annoying.

I notice the only way to put text on a new page without this happening is to select text and choose paragraph > page break before, or to just insert a section break. However, I would prefer to simply click page break or blank page without Word automatically adding this redundant space to the page prior.

I am using Word 2010.

Thanks

Click the ¶ button on the home tab. Put the cursor in front of the last paragraph break and then insert the page break. The page break goes at the end of the text.

This doesn't happen for me. I type a line of text then use Ctrl-Enter and it inserts a page break without adding a carriage return on the page. Neither with insert page break through the ribbon.

How are you entering the page break?

gmayor - I tried what you suggested however it still creates the line (which says page break in that ¶ view)

esme - I just tested Ctrl-Enter and it still creates the return, just like the ribbon icon does.

What I would like is for the page break to function the same as right click text > paragraph > page break before, where there is no annoying added blank line in normal view and no page break in ¶ view.

Surely there is an option for this?

Thanks

Yes. There's an option. Turn off display of non-printing formatting marks.

Page break before formatting does not involve the insertion of anything. Inserting a next-page section break or a manual page break does involve inserting a code in the document. Display of non-printing formatting marks shows those.

Charles - I'm not talking about the formatting marks. In the normal printing view, there is empty space added before a manual page break. It looks like a big tab. If you type after the space the text appears on the next page. If the space is deleted, the break is deleted too. It's obviously a placeholder for the page break, but I find it annoying when editing documents. Word did not handle breaks like this prior to 2007.

I found the solution now. For anyone searching, try:

File > Options > Advanced > (scroll down) Layout Options > Split apart page break and paragraph mark

Now you can add a manual page break or blank page without Word creating empty space. You can type and delete on the preceding page without affecting the break and text will stay on that page. If you click at the top of the next page and backspace, the page break will be deleted, as it should be.
