Post Numbering not restarting at 1 between list styles

I created a list style for my different headings in my document. The outline of my document looks like this when I use my heading styles:

1 Heading 1 Style
1.1 Heading 2 Style
1.2 Heading 2 Style
1.2.1 Heading 3
1.3 Heading 2 Style
The problem comes in when I try to create numbered lists that start at 1 when there is more than one of the same heading style. Here is an example of what happens:

1 Heading 1 Style
1.1 Heading 2 Style
1. H2 1.1 List item #1
2. H2 1.1 List item #2
3. H2 1.1 List item #3
1.2 Heading 2 Style
4. H2 1.2 List item #1
5. H2 1.2 List item #2
6. H2 1.2 List item #3
1.2.1 Heading 3 Style
1.3 Heading 2 Style
Notice that the list between item 1.1 and 1.3 doesn't restart, but continues.

If I select "Restart at 1" from the right-click menu, it restarts to 1, but Word thinks the first item in the second list still belongs to the first list (Note: When you click on the numbering it highlights the numbers that belong to the same list in gray. In this case, Word think 5 numbers belongs to a list, and the first item belongs to another list.

I would like to have brand new lists that restart at 1 under each new heading that I create.

I tried creating a different list style just for my numbering, but the same thing happens.

Thanks for any support you can provide.

See How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Ribbon Versions of Word by Shauna Kelly and follow the directions there.

Are you able to upload or email a copy of the file so I can take a look at how it is setup? Just remove any confidential or private information.

I understand your frustration. I've been there.

However, had you followed those steps, all of them, in order, you would not be having this problem because the styles would take care of it.

In a heavily-edited document Word's automatic numbering is FUBAR unless the numbering is properly linked to styles. The reasons for this are explained in John McGhie's article Word Numbering Explained. Shauna Kelly's work is based on that article. Reading it may give you context for the reasons for the steps.

Numbering in Microsoft Word

I, too, invite you to post a version of the problem document. To post a document here you need to click the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the reply window and then click on the paperclip attachment button.

You can fill the document with non-confidential text using the Rand or Lorem autocorrect functions. The rand "virus": or how to insert dummy text into a document

Hello again,

Thank you for your replies. Since I have followed the article step-by-step and I am still experiencing issues, I will attach a new document from the template (NewFromTemplate.docx) to this post reply, and you can help me figure out the problem with my styles.

Just a quick explanation of the styles before you jump on it:

I created two "List Styles":
1. One for my headings called "Headings" (The levels are linked to styles "Heading 1", "Heading 2", "Heading 3", etc)
2. One for my simple numbering inside the headings - This is the one that is causing me trouble - It's called "HeadingsSimpleList" (The levels are linked to styles "Heading1CustomNumbering", "Heading2CustomNumbering", "Heading3CustomNumbering", etc)

Go to the section #3 "3 System Requirements" of the document to see what it is doing.

I want the numbering in section 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, etc to start at 1, and not continue from my last list.

Thanks for the help you can provide.

Joey

P.S. This forum doesn't accept uploading a .dotx file the reason I uploaded a new document from the template.

Working on it. I am assuming that in Section 3 you want your numbering following 3.2 to restart at 1. Is that correct?

In the meantime, here is the XML that defines your numbering:

Code:

Not sure why you are using 2 lists.

Yes, you are right with your assumption. Basically, I would like to have the numbering start at 1 anytime I have more than 1 heading of the same style in a row (3.1, 3.2, 3.3, etc - any numbered list that I would start in any of those headings would start at 1).

I am unsure why I am using two List Styles as well, but I couldn't make it work either ways.

Thanks for looking into this.

I am attaching a document with one list. I only did three levels of numbering because I was being lazy. When I do a list for myself, I set up all nine levels even if I only expect to use two or three.

All three levels are attached to headings styles but that would not be required. The third heading style is formatted exactly like body text except it has an outline level and is numbered. You could format a separate body text style that would have the same indent and font if you wanted to put additional material under a numbered item.

Than you Charles. I went through your document.

I think I overcomplicated things by creating a List Style for my simple numbering. I can just use the numbering button after the "Body Text" style to start a simple list. I tried to create a couple more headings with the same style and I could start a new numbering list at 1 every time.

Thank you for your help,
Joey

This may work, if you don't do much editing on the document where you move stuff around. Those buttons on the ribbon are for beginners and do cause problems in complex documents.
