Default WORD not Saving Changes

I have users suddenly (since 8/21/2014) creating WORD documents from WORD 2010, the templates are WORD 97, 2003 format, and their changes and saves are sometimes not saving.

Is there a way to confirm that the files are actually saving?

Can you try to save the document differently than you are now? Perhaps, instead of the place its located, try saving on your desktop and seeing if it retains the changes. If not, try emailing and opening it on a different computer and maybe seeing if that works? I have seen strange issues like this when my company has migrated to other versions of office.
