Cannot open saved Word document
I have been writing a historical document using MS Word 2010. I have been writing this document for the past year. It is now about 150 pages and contains text and photos. Recently, after writing another couple of pages, saving the changes, and closing the document, I find I cannot open the file. The message I get when trying to open the file is: "The file xxx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents. Details: The name of the end tag of the element must match the element type in the start tag."
Has anyone had this problem and seen this message? I can open other MS Word documents without a problem. The other documents were written previous to making these latest changes. Could my copy of MS Word (part of MS Office Professional Plus 2010) have gotten corrupted such that the SAVE doesn't work correctly? Is there any way to recover the file with the latest changes? I have a previous version of the file, but it does not have my latest updates. |

The message indicates some corruption in the document's xml code. The cause is said to have been fixed with Office 2010 SP1. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2528942. Do you have that installed? The link also has an MS 'FixIt' that's supposed to repair the affected document - but only if it contains an equation. Other repair methods are also listed.
