Closing space between document and vertical ruler
Hi, all.
I recently purchased Office 2013 and am using it on a 23" wide monitor with Windows 8.1. The vertical ruler is only visible in Print view, which in itself is maddening enough. But in Print view, there is about 5-6" of gray screen space between the ruler and the document. The ruler is all the way to the left edge of the monitor, which makes it completely useless. Is there any way to: 1) close up this space so the ruler is next to the document or 2) make the vertical ruler visible in Draft view. Thank you. Todd |

This is what you get (the ruler in print view) when you work with a level of zoom that either doesn't fill the available space, or isn't small enough to allow the display of two pages, which will flip the page to the left of the screen. There is a third party tools available called Clever Ruler that you might find useful that will also work on the draft view (or other applications), but as draft is in no way representative of the finished document, its use there would seem superfluous?

Thanks very much for your reply. I didn't even think about zooming in that big. The ruler does then appear next to the document. I'm not used to working at that magnification, but it certainly does help.
The other thing that I realized I am missing (or maybe I'm imagining that it existed) is the rule line that you can drag from the left and top rulers. I could have sworn that earlier versions had that feature. Also, one little kvetch about the rulers in Word 2013: You have to click on exactly the right spot to set a tab or else it doesn't work. In earlier versions, you could just click on the ruler and set the tab. Now it seems you have to click on the bottom of the ruler to set a tab. It's rather annoying. I appreciate the response. Thanks again. Todd |

If the extra large zoom is an issue, make the Word window narrower instead, which is not an issue with a wide screen monitor. You should be able to find a compromise that suits you.
Word 2013 still has the line associated with the tab and the margin setting from the ruler? The tab selection area is, as you say, smaller, but it works much the same. Far better however to set your tabs in the paragraph styles used in your documents.

Thanks. That's another simple solution I didn't think of. My problem is that I'm so used to having maximized windows that it bugs me to narrow them. But that's a pilot error problem, not a Word problem. :-)
Could you clarify this part of your post? I'm not sure what you mean: "Word 2013 still has the line associated with the tab and the margin setting from the ruler?" Thanks very much. Todd |

It was a reference to:
Quote:
The only application I can recall that had movable rulers was Pagemaker, and I have not seen that for some time. Word's ruler is associated with the page size, with '0' at the margins.

Yes, I think it was a desktop publishing program I was thinking of where you could drag a full line onto the document to help with alignment. I don't know why I thought Word did that.
Thanks for the reply. Todd |
